General Mental Health Issues

Ulifeline
An internet resource to provide students, faculty, and staff with important mental health information, anonymous mental health screenings, and a link to the University's mental health resources.

The Student Counseling Virtual Pamphlet Collection
This site offers a collection of electronic pamphlets specifically for college tudents covering a wide range of mental health and academic performance issues.

American Psychological Association (APA)
This site provides recent mental health research information for professionals, students, and the public. The "Help Center" at the site provides information for the public on mental health issues, although the NIMH site (below) provides easier to understand descriptions.

Internet Mental Health
This site provides basic information on many psychological disorders. It provides information on diagnosis and medication using easily understandable language. It has links to related magazine articles and discussion forums. The Internet Mental Health site has essays from those who have experienced the disorders, (including depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder). Although some of the essays could be more distressing for some individuals if they are not experiencing the same "lows" as those writing the essays, the first-hand descriptions of the low periods, the journey back to health, and the encouragement to continue effective treatments (i.e., medication compliance and counseling) are helpful.

National Alliance for the Mentally Ill
The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) is a nonprofit, grassroots, self-help, support and advocacy organization of consumers, families, and friends of people with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety disorders. The site is easy to understand and provides clear information on numerous mental health concerns.

National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
This website provides information for clients, clinicians, and researchers on many mental health concerns. It lists diagnostic criteria for various mental health concerns, mental health statistics, research updates for practitioners, and information regarding mental health research trials. This is an excellent site for reliable, factual information.

Understanding Therapy and Picking a Therapist
4Therapy.com's website provides very useful information about what therapy is and how to pick a therapist. The site offers a geographically-based therapist referral source as well as books and other products promoting good mental health. Medication Treatment for Mental Health Concerns
This National Institute of Mental Health website talks about the types and uses of medication in treating mental health problems. Potential side effects are also discussed.

WebM.D.
This website allows the viewer to look up information on a specific medication.

Physician's Desk Reference
This web version of the Physician's Desk Reference provides helpful information on various treatment approaches to depression. Note that this web site is sponsored by Pharmaceutical companies.

Specific Mental Health Conditions

Depression and Bipolar Disorders
The mission of the National Depressive and Manic- Depressive Association is to educate patients, families, professionals, and the public concerning the nature of depressive and manic-depressive illness as treatable medical diseases; to foster self-help for patients and families; to eliminate discrimination and stigma; to improve access to care; and to advocate for research toward the elimination of these illnesses. This site provides definitions of depression and bipolar disorder, advocacy information, and clinical trial information.

Anxiety
The Anxiety Panic Internet Resource website provides basic information about the various types of anxiety disorders. It has a bulletin board section where people can discuss their concerns with each other. It has a directory for locating local resources, a monthly newsletter, and links to other health and alternative health sites.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders
Founded by a group of individuals with OCD the mission of the Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation is to educate the public and professional communities about OCD assistance to individuals with OCD and related disorders, their family and friends; and to support research into the causes and effective treatments of OCD and related disorders. This site gives information on symptoms and treatment for OCD (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and/or Medication). The sections on medications are very helpful, and include numbers for the medication manufacturers for those who don't have insurance that will cover the medication. Information is presented in an easy to understand manner.

The Queer Student Cultural Center (QSCC)
The Queer Student Cultural Center is a University of Minnesota student run organization. The website provides links to numerous local and web-based GLBT resources.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) Programs Office (U of MN)
The GLBT Programs Offices assists bisexual, transgender, gay, and lesbian faculty, staff, and students (and our allies) in creating a supportive campus community while educating and providing resources for all members of the University of Minnesota about issues that impact the experiences of transgender, gay, lesbian, and bisexual people.

Queer Graduate and Professional Association (QGPA)
This website is also linked from the QSCC site above. Their mission is to work to reduce the isolation of GLBT Graduate and Professional students on the University of Minnesota campus with social activities, to aid in professional development through workshops and discussions, and to better represent GLBT students in graduate and professional student organizations on campus. Their website provides a list of individuals who are willing to share their experiences and suggestions of being a GLBT individual on campus.

Out Front Minnesota
This website identifies itself an online community center. The organization provides anti-violence, legal, public policy, education and training, and volunteer information.

Eating Disorders

Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention, Inc.
This site provides clear information on the range of eating disorders, ideas for preventing eating disorders, and suggestions for how to obtain appropriate interventions.

Harvard Eating Disorders Center
The Harvard Eating Disorders Center advances the understanding, prevention, and treatment of eating disorders through research, education, and outreach. The center conducts research into the causes and treatments for eating disorders, as well as their associated medical and psychological conditions. The website includes a section for understanding eating disorders with suggested interventions for helping friends, students, and family members obtain professional help.

Something Fishy - Website on Eating Disorders
This site provides eating disorder information with an emotional impact. The greatest strength of this site is the list of suggestions for staying motivated, positive (and believable) affirmations, coping strategies, etc. It includes personal stories, factual information, links to online resources and professional organizations, and local referral sources for treatment of eating disorders.

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Children and Adults with Attention/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD)
This is the website for the organization Children and Adults with Attention/Hyperactivity Disorder. The site offers helpful general information on ADD/ADHD issues for children and adults, including a helpful section on "unproven treatments".

Focus on ADD
This private web site appears to have helpful information on ADD/ADHD without selling a specific product or service. There are helpful internet links to sites such as the National Institute of Health research site.

Learning Disabilities National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
This web site of the National Institute of Mental Health offers a comprehensive overview of definitions and types of learning disabilities as well as resources for getting assistance with learning disabilities issues.

National Center for Learning Disabilities
Web site for the National Center for Learning Disabilities. Offers helpful definitions of learning disabilities as well as success tips for adults with learning disabilities.
