Textbook Application - Reading Strategies for ESL

I. Before You Read

Discover the organization of your text.

  1. Describe how the whole text is organized. (How is it divided? Subdivided? Etc.)
  2. Describe how a chapter is organized. (How is it divided? Subdivided? Etc.)
    Are there summaries?
Are there questions at the end of the chapter?

II. Look At the Assigned Chapter

  1. What are any photographs, charts, and diagrams about (read the captions)?
  2. What are the subtitles of the chapter (subdivisions)? List them.
  3. Look at the questions, if there are any, in the text.
  4. Think about what you already know about this topic.
What questions do you have about this subject? Write at least three.

III. First Reading

Read the entire chapter or assigned parts as quickly as you can.
Record page numbers and your time: ________________________________.
List any key words (words that frequently occurred and seemed important to the meaning) that you didn't know.
Were your questions in II.4 answered by the text? If so, what are the answers?
IV. Second Reading

Write two more questions you now have.
Reread the chapter more carefully.
Record your time: ________________________________.
What are the answers to your questions?
What were some of the main points?
What terms were defined? If there are any key words that you still don't understand, look those up now in the glossary or a dictionary.
If there are questions at the end of the chapter, answer those now.
