The UCCS practicum is a 17 hour/week, two-semester long training experience. All practicum students attend a weekly seminar facilitated by a UCCS staff psychologist. Practicum students work with a small group of peers under the supervision of a staff member and/or an intern two half-days per week. Students may be rotated to new supervisors each semester, providing a range of different experiences with supervisory methods.
Supervisors and practicum group members listen to and observe interviews conducted by practicum students. They are then able to give feedback and to discuss any questions or concerns which the student may have about a session. Each interview is recorded on videotape. This tape is then available for review.
The practicum is designed to develop counselors in the following areas:
All areas are designed to be applicable to the many kinds of problems and concerns clients bring to us - educational/vocational, study skills, relationship, and personal.
Eligibility
UCCS practicum students must be University of Minnesota students enrolled in either the Educational Psychology-Counseling and Student Personnel Psychology Program or the Psychology Department-Counseling Psychology Program. Practicum placements are decided during spring semester and students then complete their practicum during the following fall and spring semesters.
